Lighting Photographs

Side lighting and front lighting.
Lighting is the brightness or darkness of a shot, this can be left as natural light for example outside in the sunlight, or you can used enhanced lighting which is light that is set up by the crew to make a scene brighter.

Side lighting is a type of lighting, it is usually created by enhanced lighting because one side of the face is lightened and the other in shadow. This kind of lighting is a very masculine because it gives the darker lighting carets a shadow on the bone lines in your face, jaw and under eye.  The side lighting effect is also masculine because it gives of a sense of mystery or darkness as only half the face is seen.  Side lighting is also good at making people think of themselves as being the person they are looking at, it’s a window to the future self.

Front lighting, although created by enhanced lightening, is different to side lighting, it doesn’t give off a masculine appearance, but more of a feminine one. This is because the light emphasises the female features such as the eyes and cheeks. It makes the woman look more attractive as these aspects look brightener and more amplified making the woman look more attractive and appealing. This is also the same as sit makes a window to the future self, because people see the more attractive parts emphasised then they think that that person is actually more attractive and want to be more like them.

If  was going to use one of these lightings then I would use side lighting as I intend to make my magazine mostly aimed at men and this will give the men someone to look to be or create a window for the future self for them. I think that front lighting is good but think that it wouldn’t fit as well into my idea of a magazine.
